A journalistic approach
Not all stories are easy, and it’s the ones with hard parts that make me strive to be better at my job. I knew I was going to love these two the moment I met up with them at a cool cocktail bar in downtown Austin. They were super open and vulnerable with me. They were not afraid to tell me the hard parts of their story that involved the loss of Matthew’s mother. I wanted to include his mother in their story and honor her as best I could. Caitlin, as a journalism major, loved that I showed up to cocktails with an audio recorder that I could refer to for notes and just be present with them. I will forever be grateful to this couple for allowing me into their inner circle to know them and share their story.
